The initial focus of ServingUnderserved in the local Los Angeles community has been screening for common chronic health conditions (such as asthma, depression, high blood pressure, obesity) for high school students, identification of these health conditions, and connecting these adolescents with resources needed.

Pediatric Village Healthy Lifestyle Program

The PVHLC provides a resource to engage neighborhood children and their families in active promotion of wellness through education, activities, and community building practices. The goal is to sustain healthy lifestyle choices and prevent obesity related disorders

Health Assessment Day at Lincoln High School

With the permission of the school and parents we set up a Health Assessment day to assess Lincoln High School students’ risk for chronic health conditions like asthma, obesity, hypertension, depression, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and risky behaviors (violence, sexual activity, substance abuse). By the end of the day we had screened and given health information to over 400 students.

This “Health Assessment Day” is only the first step in a process designed to identify chronic health conditions and to bring effective health care to people who may otherwise go without care.
